Hildegard von Bingen. In the Heart of God

‘I, the fiery life of the divine substance, blaze over the beauty of the fields, shine in the waters and burn in the sun, moon and stars; and with the wind that is made of air I stir all things into life, enlivening them with the invisible life that sustains everything.’ From the far edge of the firmament Hildegard contemplates the wheel of creation in the heart of God. An image of a revolving sphere, instrumentum cosmologico, within which dwells man, described in his measurements and proportions and in the internal movements of soul and body. This is the scenario collected in the Book of Divine Works and depicted in the precious miniatures of the Codex of Lucca. A long sequence that in ten scenes invites mankind to complete the journey from earth to heaven on the path of virginitas, towards the recomposition of one's self until the mystical wedding in which male and female are reunited in the divine Caritas, in the heart of God.
