American Nature, the culmination of a 20-year odyssey by one of America's foremost photographers, is both a political portrait of the nation at this crucial time and an existential warning of a potentially catastrophic future. Although the threat of climate change is very real and touches us daily, the causes and consequences are often difficult to articulate and, even more so, to portray. Mitch Epstein's monumental achievement in his cumulative work over the past two decades has been to communicate the intangible dynamics of production and power that threaten our environment, and to record as much the visions of those who oppose this threat as the faint murmur of the forest that survives over time.
